چکیده

Mohrhoff's use of the Aharonov-Bergmann-Lebowitz (ABL) rule for time-symmetric objective probabilities, as related to counterfactual intervening measurements between pre-and post-selection, is problematic. The ABL rule was formulated on the assumption that such intervening measurements are actually made, and would therefore correspond to what Mohrhoff is calling " subjective " probabilities. Ulrich Mohrhoff (1999) makes an interesting distinction between " subjective " and " objective " probabilities in quantum mechanics. However, his discussion of the Aharonov-Bergmann-Lebowitz (" ABL ") rule (ABL 1964) as related to counterfactual statements about possible intervening measurements between pre-and post-selection should take into account that there have been numerous objections in the literature to the counterfactual The ABL rule was formulated on the assumption that such intervening measurements are actually made, and would therefore appear to correspond to what Mohrhoff is calling " subjective " probabilities. However, he wishes to

Remarks on Mohrhoff’s Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

In a recently proposed interpretation of quantum mechanics, U. Mohrhoff advocates original and thought-provoking views on space and time, the definition of macroscopic objects, and the meaning of probability statements. The interpretation also addresses a number of questions about factual events and the nature of reality. The purpose of this note is to examine several issues raised by Mohrhoff’...

On the Social Construction of Overdiagnosis; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”

In an interesting article Wieteke van Dijk and colleagues argue that societal developments and values influence the practice of medicine, and thus can result in both medicalisation and overdiagnosis. They provide a convincing argument that overdiagnosis emerges in a social context and that it has socially constructed implications. However, they fail to show that overdiagnosis per se is socially...

This Is My (Post) Truth, Tell Me Yours; Comment on “The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy”

This is a commentary on the article ‘The rise of post-truth populism in pluralist liberal democracies: challenges for health policy.’ It critically examines two of its key concepts: populism and ‘post truth.’ This commentary argues that there are different types of populism, with unclear links to impacts, and that in some ways, ‘post-truth’ has resonances with arguments advanced in the period a...

Realist, Instrumentalist, and Quietist Interpretations of Scientific Theories

Questions concerning how we are to interpret our best scientific theories, make sense of what they are telling us, or even just connect them systematically to the world around us have a remarkably long intellectual pedigree. And they have most often been motivated not by the sorts of rarified puzzles we encounter in the course of trying to decide how we could even possibly understand claims abo...
